Yes and no. Cannabidiol is one of the two best-known active compounds extracted from the cannabis plant. The other is tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the substance that produces the "high" from marijuana.

CBD can be derived from hemp or marijuana. Cannabis, a related plant, contains 0.3% THC or less. This plant is often used to make fabric and rope. As of 2018, Congress legalized hemp in all 50 states, so CBD derived from hemp is also legal. However, the rules around hemp-derived CBD are far less clear-cut.
